Our story

Started by faith, grown by trust

Stirred by faith in God, generosity towards the needy, and a passion for medical excellence, Dr. Chuwanga John founded Dr. Chuwanga Clinic on 10th August 2015 to provide quality and affordable healthcare services to the needy, financially disadvantaged, and underprivileged.

In line with the founder's field of specialty, the clinic started as a Surgical Clinic. Today, it has expanded its services to include Gynaecology, Physiotherapy, Maternity Care, Antenatal Care, and other healthcare services.

Our work is bilingual, our prices are stated before treatment, and our emergency line never sleeps. Every patient is treated as a whole human being, not a case number.

“Lux in Tenebris — Light in Darkness. That is what a clinic should be for a family on its worst day.”

Our vision and mission

Our Vision

Our vision is to share the legacy of our founder, Dr. Chuwanga John, with the world. He aspired to bring “light” — renewed health, joy, and hope — into the lives of the sick and underprivileged.

From this vision was born the clinic's motto, Lux in Tenebris — “Light in Darkness.”

Our Mission

In line with our vision, our everyday mission is to:

  • Provide quality, compassionate, and affordable healthcare to the sick and underprivileged in our community.
  • Create numerous employment opportunities for dedicated professionals and workers within the healthcare sector.
  • Foster an organisational culture that promotes medical excellence, compassionate and empathetic care, outstanding customer service, and a strong work ethic, all rooted in Christian values and principles, thereby nurturing exemplary healthcare professionals who embody these values in their service to others.

Founder's biography

Dr. John Ndengue Chuwanga (1956–2020)

Dr. John Ndengue Chuwanga (1956–2020) was a distinguished surgeon, devoted Christian, and compassionate healthcare professional whose life was defined by excellence in service to humanity.

Born on 27th December 1956 in Tiko, Cameroon, Dr. Chuwanga pursued his passion for medicine at the University of Calabar, Nigeria, where he obtained his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery. After practising for ten years as a General Practitioner in Cameroon, he furthered his studies at the University of Nairobi, Kenya, earning a Master's degree in General Surgery.

Throughout his remarkable medical career, Dr. Chuwanga held several important positions, including Chief Medical Officer of the Batcham Sub-Divisional Hospital, Divisional Chief of Service for Public Health in Menchum, Chief of Service of the Emergency and Surgical Unit at Yaoundé Central Hospital, Director of the Buea Regional Hospital Annex, and Regional Delegate of Public Health for the Southwest Region.

Following his retirement from public service, he continued his commitment to healthcare through surgical practice and, in 2015, founded Dr. Chuwanga Clinic. His vision was to provide quality and affordable healthcare, particularly to those who were financially disadvantaged and underprivileged.

Beyond medicine, Dr. Chuwanga was married to Mrs. Marie Odette Deugoué, and their union was blessed with three children. He was also a devoted Roman Catholic Christian known for his generosity, compassion, and commitment to helping those in need. He served as Diocesan Patron of the St. Jude Apostolate, Patron of the Sacred Heart Devotional Choir, and supported numerous youth groups within the Diocese of Buea.

His professional excellence and dedication to service earned him several recognitions, including the Knight of Valour, a Certificate of Recognition from the St. Jude Apostolate, and an Icon of Excellence Certificate from St. Joseph's College Sasse.

He passed away on 25th March 2020, leaving behind a lasting legacy of faith, compassion, medical excellence, and service to humanity — values that continue to inspire the mission of Dr. Chuwanga Clinic today.

Our values

Our values at Dr Chuwanga Clinic

These values guide how we care for our patients, support our employees, and serve our community. They are not posters on a wall — staff are recruited, reviewed and promoted against them.

Our Reference — Christian Foundation

Our Christian foundation is the reference point for our purpose, culture, and values, and so it fashions the spirit of the vision we carry. Owing to this foundation, our founder started this work. Today, we are the next step in that legacy.

Our Heart — Patient First, Employees Also First

Our patients are at the centre of our vocation as clinicians, so we labour in love and compassion to see them experience renewed health, renewed hope, and a delight in living. At the same time, we believe excellent patient care begins with employees who feel respected, supported, and valued.

Our Sweat — Excellence & Faithfulness

Our work is our stage of impact, where we apply medical excellence, an outstanding work ethic, and patient-oriented customer service to uplift the sick and underprivileged. We own our jobs, knowing our collective success depends on everyone's contribution, and we seek the fulfilment that comes from giving our very best.

Our Redlines — Standards We Do Not Compromise

The health of our patients, the wellbeing of our staff, and the progression of our vision are delicate matters, and so we protect them with great discipline. We continuously pursue the highest standards of safety, professionalism, integrity, transparency, and dignity throughout our practice.

Global family, local roots

Who we are

One family, many places

The Luxian bond extends far beyond the walls of DCC and the daily routines of clinical practice.

As Luxians, we do not see each other merely as colleagues — we recognise a family shaped by shared vocation, professional excellence, and the deep compassion that defines the Dr Chuwanga Spirit.

Whether one served as a clinician or support staff, the experiences we lived together at DCC created a lasting identity. Our commitment to quality healthcare, empathetic service, and the standards our sector deserves continues to unite us, no matter where life leads.

A Luxian remains a Luxian even after leaving DCC. What qualifies someone is not their current workplace, but the posture, values, and vision they carry forward — especially the belief in delivering care that uplifts patients and strengthens communities.

Beyond those directly linked to DCC, we warmly welcome patrons, partners, and collaborators who share our mission. Anyone who aligns with the Luxian spirit and contributes to advancing healthcare excellence becomes part of this growing global community.
