Feeding young children well on a normal budget

Good nutrition in Buea does not require imported products. Local food, combined properly, covers almost everything a growing child needs.

Parents often ask us which expensive supplement will make a child grow. In almost every case the answer is food that is already in the market.

Build the plate

A staple such as plantain, cocoyam or rice; a protein such as beans, groundnut, egg, fish or meat; and a vegetable — dark green leaves whenever possible. Add fruit as a snack instead of sweets and sugary drinks.

The first two years matter most

Breastfeed exclusively for six months, then continue breastfeeding while introducing soft family food. Feed a small child five times a day: their stomach is small, so frequency does the work.

If a child is losing weight, refusing food, or looks pale and tired, bring them in. We can check for anaemia, worms and malaria in the same visit.
